At University of Missouri Health Care, our adolescent medicine team encourages all children to participate in sports or other regular physical activity. Team sports help teach adolescents accountability, dedication, leadership and other skills. Special Olympics offers 30-plus Olympic-style individual and team sports that provide meaningful training and competition opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympics Young Athletes is an early childhood play program for children with and without intellectual disabilities, ages 2 to 7 years old. About 1.4 million people worldwide take part in Unified Sports, breaking down stereotypes about people with intellectual disabilities in a really fun way. An annual sporting tradition since 2016 and officially proclaimed by UNESCO, the events on 20th September help enhance the links between universities and their local communities.
